The Basics of Rehabilitation Physical Therapy
For individuals suffering from certain diseases or injuries or recovering from a surgical procedure, rehabilitation physical therapy can be helpful. Physical therapy consists of strategies designed to decrease discomfort while increasing function and mobility. Therapists must undergo extensive education, training and licensing requirements before they can work in this field. There are a variety of ways these therapists can work with patients to reach the desired outcome.
Therapists use massage, exercise, heat, cold, ultrasound and electrotherapy and more. What you can expect depends on your individual case. When you first see a therapist he or she will examine you thoroughly and decide upon a course of action for your individual needs. You may end up using more than one therapy technique. Exercise and massage are two of the most common types of therapy used, especially for muscular and connective tissue problems. Your therapist will probably treat you in their office and assign you exercises to do at home. In order for the exercises to do fulfill their purpose you must perform them as directed. Some patients find exercising the affected area difficult, however your therapist will guide you through the process and it will become easier.
One thing that is important to remember is that it takes time for any kind of rehab program to work. You will need to follow all instructions given by your therapist and be patient for the results. It may take weeks or even months for positive results to be seen. However the importance of therapy for certain conditions cannot be minimized. Whether or not you are a good candidate for physical therapy depends on the type of problem you are having. Your doctor can evaluate your medical issues and refer you to the right professional therapist if necessary. A physician referral may be required for insurance coverage.
You can find rehabilitation physical therapy clinics and professionals located all over the country. Physical therapists work in hospitals, private practices, schools, gyms and more. There are rehabilitation clinics equipped with everything necessary for physical therapy, including pools and tubs for hydrotherapy. While going through the process of therapy can sometimes be arduous it is worth the effort and time for many patients. Speak to your doctor if you have questions about physical therapy, or contact a physical therapy center in your area for more information about their services.
