Physical Therapy Techniques for Rehabilitation
There are a variety of different physical therapy techniques that can be implemented depending on the problem you are having and the area in which you are having it. For many conditions exercise is a common technique utilized by therapists for their patients. Not only may therapists do manual manipulation exercises, they may teach their patients exercises to do at home. The hands, wrists, back, knees and legs are all areas where exercise may be helpful.
The purpose of physical therapy exercises are to stretch and strengthen the affected area, thus helping the patient regain greater function. Exercise may also be prescribed as a preventative measure. For example, those who work on an assembly line or type all day may want to try hand exercises before and after work. If you can, stretch several times throughout the work day as well. A physical therapist can teach you the ideal exercises for your problem, whether it is in your hands or not. There are exercises to benefit every part of the body. In addition to the therapy exercises your doctor and/or therapist may recommend a cardiovascular exercise routine.
Some physical therapists use water exercise because water makes an excellent cushion for the joints and provides resistance. Another technique you may want to consider is massage. Myofascial massage, also known as trigger point massage, is a technique that helps relieve tight muscular pain in various areas of the body. Ultrasound therapy is yet another way physical therapists can help their patients. Some PT professionals even use electrotherapy for certain conditions. The treatment you will receive depends on what the therapist feels will best help you.
Often physical therapy techniques will be combined for the best results. For example a therapist may prescribe exercise, massage and ultrasound therapy together. When you first visit a physical therapist, he or she will perform a thorough examination which will help them create a customized plan to help you in your rehabilitation. From there, you will told how often your therapy appointments will be, what they will consist of and what you can do at home to speed and enhance recovery. Your regular doctor should also be a part of your treatment team and be kept updated regarding the physical therapy you are receiving.
