Online Physical Therapy Resources
Whether you are a patient in need of help or a student researching a possible career there are many online physical therapy resources. One is APTA, which stands for the American Physical Therapy Association. Not only does this association have more than 72,000 members, it provides a great deal of online information for therapists, students and patients. On the APTA site you'll discover areas for professionals and consumers. No matter which category you fit into the information to be found online is vast and helpful.
The first thing anyone should learn is what physical therapy is. While it can encompass a wide variety of treatments and parts of the body, the goal of physical therapy is to help the patient regain mobility and use of the affected area. Physical therapists may teach patients exercises they can do to strengthen the area where problems are occurring. Therapists also perform treatments like ultrasound therapy, hydrotherapy, heat and cold application, massage, manual manipulation and more. The treatment plan devised will be individualized for each patient. The type of treatment you can expect depends on your condition and what your therapist feels will be most beneficial.
Another way the Internet can help you is through sites that guide you through preventative exercises. In addition to APTA, there are many others where you'll find illustrations, descriptions and even video demonstrations of how the exercises are performed. There are exercises for hands that help prevent repetitive stress injury and carpal tunnel syndrome. There are exercises for the knees like squats and lunges, and of course exercises for the troublesome back area. However you should not do any exercises until consulting your doctor first. Preventative exercises, when done correctly, should decrease the likelihood of strain and injury in certain areas and if you are in decent shape your doctor should give you the green light.
Online physical therapy information cannot replace an actual physical therapy session with an experienced and licensed therapist. Physical therapists must undergo an extensive educational and training program before they can be licensed. They will first give perform a thorough examination then develop a rehabilitation plan tailored to your needs. You should speak to your doctor also when considering or undergoing physical therapy. Not only might you need a referral from him or her, your regular doctor should be kept informed regarding your rehabilitation plan and progress achieved.
